The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-senUniversity, originally known as the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Public Institution of Medicine, was founded in 1910 by Dr. Paul Jerome Todd (an American medical missionary) with 40 western doctors.
The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-senUniversity is composed of the Headquarters, East Division and Huiya Hospital. The Hospital is an important base for research, medical service, medical education, preventive care and rehabilitation in South China. It is well known for its high quality and excellent service in China and Southeast Asia. For years, it has been recognized as the most reliable hospital in mainland China by Hong Kong residents.
Currently, there are 5,869 members of staff in the hospital, including 1,565 doctors and 2,770 nurses.
There are 31 clinical departments and 100 specialtiesin the hospital with a good reputation for clinical service, among which 5disciplines - Nephrology, General Surgery, Neurology, Otorhinolaryngology and Endocrinology - have been recognized by the Ministry of Education as “National Key Disciplines”. There are also 28 “National Key Clinical Specialties” in thehospital, such as Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Gastroenterology andHepatology, Nephrology, Neurology, etc. Department of Rehabilitation has been selected as a WHO Collaborating Center for Rehabilitation. The Laboratory of Nephrology and the Laboratory on Assisted Circulation are Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Health.
Over the past 10 years, the hospital has won 90 awards for achievements in research and development. They include 3 “The Second Prize for National Science & Technology Progress” (Prof. Xiuling Liang in 2000, Prof. Guihua Chen in 2004, Prof. Xueqing Yu in 2006), 16 “The Prize of Chinese Medical Science & Technology”, 5 “The First Prize forScience & Technology Progress in Guangdong”. It has undertaken 885 various research projects supported by MOST (Ministry of Science & Technology), “973 Project”, “863 Project”, and the National Natural Science Fund. Currently, 49 experts in the hospital are appointed as the chairsof different medical societies in Guangdong and China. In addition, the hospital manages 8 national key medical journals, including Chinese Journal of Nephrology, Chinese Journal of Microsurgery, Chinese Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Chinese Journal of Neurological and Psychological Diseases, Chinese Archives of General Surgery, Journal of Image & Interventional Radiology and Modern Clinical Nursing.
With 3,888 beds, the hospital serves more than 4.80 million outpatients every year. There are more than 68,700 surgical operations and 102,536 discharges annually. The hospital has a Private Medical Center, which draws patients from around the world and offers aspecialist medical service for them. The hospital is also equipped with a avariety of advanced medical equipments such as PET-CT, 3T-MRI, 64 Slides SpiralCT, ECT, TCD, EMG, Doppler, bidirectional cardioangiograghic equipment, heart monitoring system, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripter, electronic endoscope,etc. Based on its advanced technology, the hospital successfully diagnosed and cured many critical, difficult and rare diseases, such as the first case of dieresis in the country for conjoined twins and the craniopagus twins, the operation to rectify a child born with 3 legs and the first operation in Asia to transplant the kidney and liver simultaneously.
The hospital is the biggest clinical teachingbase of Sun Yat-sen University, taking up more than 60% of the clinical teaching tasks as well as post-graduate education and continuing education. There are 155 PhD tutors and 274 master tutors. Each year, there are over 800 students graduating from the hospital with PhD or master degree. Thehospital is also an important base for national continuing medical education. It undertakes more than 25 continuing medical education programs each year. It offers clinical training programs for doctors and other health professionals from all over the world and more than 1,000 medical workers receive their medical training in the hospital each year.

At present, the hospital has established academic collaboration with hospitals from more than 20 countries and regions, such as UT Southwestern Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital, UCLA HealthSystem in U.S.A., University of Birmingham in U.K., Lund University in Sweden,Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong, etc. It hosts more than 10 international academic conferences each year.
